Wassily chair: design by Marcel Breuer

The Wassily chair, or B3 Model was designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925 and dedicated to the great Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, the father of abstract art. Breuer, first a student and then teacher at the Bauhaus, is considered one of the leading exponents of the modern movement, founded by Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe.

The movement, between the two world wars, sought to create a new type of architecture that would give maximum importance to the functionality of objects. For the first time, the pure aesthetic was overshadowed, or rather, beauty itself was identified in the direct relationship between the building and purpose. From this perspective, the careful choice of materials was considered one of the most important aspects of the production process. Breuer is part of this current with the design of a series of tubular metal furniture including Wassily chair and cantilever chair.

The Wassily chair is considered revolutionary both in the choice of materials (leather and steel tube) for both methods of production. Perhaps it was another creation of Breuer, cycling Adler, to inspire the choice of using steel pipes, excellent material as readily available in large quantities. In terms of design belongs to the modernist movement, and today is considered a timeless classic. The leather of which is covered is available in various colors.

Breuer's Wassily chair, wrote about the "So I had already flashed the idea of replacing the thick, padded seat with a sheet of fabric taut. I also wanted a frame elastic and flexible. By virtue of the interaction between the fabric taut and elastic elements of the casing, this furniture had to offer greater comfort without be massive.

I also tried to reach a certain transparency of the shape and then a light so that optical physics. In my studies on mass production and standardization soon discovered the metal polished, and bright lines in space as well as new elements of our furniture. In these bright lines and arched not only saw the symbols of modern technology, but technology in general.
