Table Eero Sarineen: An Alternative Vision of Table

When you think about a table, for the dining room o for the living room, maybe you imagine a round or a square shape, and some legs that support the table. The table by eero Saarinen shows an alternative vision of the classic table in the design furniture world. We must remember that the Finnish-American architect and designer Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) was one of the most prolific and diverse industrial designers of the 20th century. Simple, sweeping, structural curves and machine-like rationalism: the varying style of his work flexes with the demands of each project.

Born to world-famous architect and Cranbrook Academy of Art director Eliel Saarinen and textile artist Loja Saarinen, Saarinen was surrounded by design his whole life. After studying sculpture in Paris and architecture at Yale, Saarinen returned in 1934 to Michigan to teach at Cranbrook, work on furniture designs, and practice architecture with his father.
It was at Cranbrook that Saarinen met Charles Eames. The two young men, both committed to exploring new materials and processes, quickly became great friends and creative collaborators.

They worked together on several projects, most notably their groundbreaking collection of molded plywood chairs for 1940 competition Organic Design in Home Furnishings, sponsored by MoMA.

At Cranbrook, Saarinen also met Florence Knoll, who at that time was a promising young protégé of Eliel Saarinen. When Florence joined Knoll in the 1940s, she invited Eero to design for the company. In addition to these achievements, Saarinen became a leader of the second-generation modernists. Among his outstanding projects are the Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, and New York's CBS Building and TWA Terminal at Kennedy International Airport.

With his tulip table eero saarinen had a great impact on the way to look at the table: looking for new and essential shape, Eero Saarinen projected and realized his tulip table without the “slum of legs” necessary to support the table. Instead of the classic legs, Eero Saarine projected a table with one pedestal, that end in a solid round base.

The tulip table by eero Saarinen (projected and made between 1955 and 1957) represented an innovation in the common sense in furniture: with this object the Finnish- American designer reinvented the table itself.

Until that moment a table should be solid and usefully: with tulip table by eero Saarinen this vison changed and using new lines was the key to transform a simple table in a design object. But also in the choose of the material of the tulip table by eero Saarinen the Finnish – American designer was a pioneer. In fact the Finnish designer used innovative materials for his production: the tulip table, with the tulip chairs, was originally made in fiberglass.

The tulip table by eero Saarinen had a great success and its shape, original and bold, is actual and widespread also at the present time, suffering during the year by various forgery attempts.

If your choose the tulip table by eero Saarinen for your living room, you will buy not only a table, but a piece of modern furniture history, with an unique style and elegance.
