Sofa Lc2 by Le Corbusier: Design for The Human Anatomy

The sofa lc2 by Le Corbusier represents a true revolutions between the couches: Le Corbusier has design and made this sofa between 1928 and 1929 for the Salon d’Automne art exhibition in Paris (with a set of chair, armchair and chaise lounge). The Swiss designer and architect  Le Corbusier worked hard on the project of the sofa lc2, particularly in the realization of preliminary studios on this seats: Le Corbusier studied with attention the human anatomy, trying to made a seat that can be comfortable for every different person who used it.

Following the results of these studies, Le Corbusier made the sofa lc2 in two different version: the first was the “Petite Modele”, with more rigid forms, studied to receive male body, the second was the “Grande Modele”, with more big and soft forms, studied to better receive female body (the female body is normally characterized by rounded and soft forms).
All the chair, armchair, couch and chaise longue were designed as a modernist response to the traditional club chair by the Le Corbusier group, which on this project included Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand.

Their goal was to provide the well-padded comfort of the club chair without violating the industrial and minimalist principals that were the backbone of what was called the Modern Movement. The resulting sofa lc2  lines were so wildly successful, they remain among the most recognisable and beloved pieces of 20th century furniture.

Le Corbusier has put a great attention in the preliminary studios on the sofa lc2, so this couch become a unique piece in design and furniture history: you can find this sofa with 2 or 3 seats, so this couch can satisfy different needs for space and seats. Furthermore this couch can mold together a big comfort and a sober and  elegant style, always actual.

For the sofa lc2 Le Corbusier has choose modern material, never used before for the furniture, like the steel, that was used for the frame of the couch. By using the steel, Le Corbusier gave to his sofa lc2 a solid frame, with an elegant and sober style (following the dictates of the Modern Movement, that established the functionality of the object like first important trait).

Le Corbusier was fascinated with proportional systems, such as the Golden Ratio, and the Fibonacci Series, both of which he integrated into his own system, Modulor. Modulor is based around the Golden Section as it relates to the human body, and the result is architecture and furniture that just feels right.

This is reflected in Le Corbusier’s description of his furniture as “extensions of our limbs and adapted to human functions.” If you lay down on his famous sofa lc2 you’ll quickly realise what he means – it feels as though it has been sculpted to fit your body precisely, regardless of your physique.

If you choose a sofa lc2 by Le Corbusier for your home or office, you could be sure you will find non only a comfortable and relaxing couch, but also a piece of history furniture, an object with unique lines and styles, modern also after almost a century from its creation
