The Lota Sofa by Eileen Gray: Luxury and Comfort

A couch should always have some features: in the first place, a couch should offer a comfortable seat for whom use it, has to be solid and show style and elegance.  With all these features a couch can be a design furniture and you can choose it for your living room: the lota sofa by Eileen Gray  absolutely encases these features, being one of the most design furniture of the last century.

Coming from an aristocratic Irish-Scottish family, Eileen Gray went to London and Paris to study architecture and design. She first made a name for herself as a leading designer of lacquered walls and decorative panels. With her theories on design and architecture she left an indelible mark on our ideas about living. Today she is still considered the epitome of Modernism and is the only woman whose name is mentioned in the same breath as Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer.

The Irish painter and designer made the  lota  sofa by Eileen gray for the apartment of Madame Mathieu-Levy on Rue de Lota in Paris: that apartment  was regarded as one of the most sensational examples of French interior architecture of the 1920s. Eileen Gray had created the decor over a period of five years. It featured were black and silver lacquered wall panels and a sumptuous lounge in the shape of a dugout canoe.

Yet another such showpiece was the sofa Lota with its luxuriant cushions and multi-coloured lacquered side pieces. Eileen Gray liked it so much that she later made a second one for her own home.

It’s easy to understand why the lota sofa by eileen gray had a great success: this couch summarizes all the characteristics of the art by Eileen Gray, becoming an object with innovative and modern lines. And this without losing its primary function, that is to offer a comfortable seat for whom use this couch.

The modern lines of lota sofa by Eileen gray offer a style elegant and at the same time original, thanks to the big and soft cushions. And the idea of provide the couch with two box unit with wheels to support the armrests gives a glimpse of uniqueness to the sofa lota by Eileen Gray.

All the characteristics of the lota sofa by Eileen gray are on line with the style of the Irish designer, never trivial, but always looking for simple and geometric lines. In the production of Eileen Gray the appearance never sacrifices the primary function of an object: and the  Lota is a sofa on which to relax as well as to work. The base and back are fully upholstered and stand on turned wooden feet. A seat mattress of latex foam and feather sits upon the base along with four feather filled cushions.

This sofa, in the project of the Irish designer, has to have a dual usage by allowing the removal of the loose cushions and one of the end boxes (therefore these are on castors) so the sofa serves as a bed.

If you choose the lota sofa by Eileen gray for your living room, you will find not only a design furniture object with an unique style, but also a comfortable couch, where you can sit and relax, always with style
