Kubus Couch: The Comfort of Geometric Form

The kubus couch, actually sealed by various design company, draws inspiration from to original kubus sofa projected and realized by josef hofmann, one of the most important European designer and architect of the last century. Josef Hofmann was born in Austria and worked between the 18th and 19Th century: this was a moment of transition for the artistic movements.

In this time the artistic movements started to tear away from dominant influence of Art Noveau, and point to much simply and linear stiles, for design furniture and buildings: these art movements flowed in the Modernism. The kubus coach entered in this transition phase, rich of news and interesting hints.

Born in Pirnitz, Moravia (now Brtnice, the Czech Republic), Josef Hoffmann studied architecture at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he was fortunate enough to be schooled by Otto Wagner – the world-famous architect who introduced Hoffmann to functional, modern design theories. Upon graduating, Hoffmann won the Rome Prize and a year later joined Wagner’s office in 1896, before forming his own office three years later.

Arguably one of Hoffmann’s greatest contributions to design was to co-found the Vienna Secession in 1903: a community of artists and architects committed to creating architecture, art and textiles that were accessible to the masses. The group championed abstract and functional design over the prevailing conservative, historical influences of the time, and designed buildings as complete works of art, with architecture and furniture working in harmony.

In the kubus couch is clear the movement from the classic style with floral motifs to a much geometric and linear style: the kubus couch represents the practical objectification of a style imprinted to the respect of geometrical lines. Particularly the cubic shape has marked the design and architectonic work by Josef Hofmann. An original style that gives birth to an unique design, that marked sharply the separation from the previous artistic movements.

Designed in 1910 by Josef Hoffmann, the Kubus couch demonstrates the unique geometric lines and cubes that became Hoffmann’s trademark during the early 20th century. His ability to create compelling furniture using clean lines and geometrical shapes set him apart from his contemporaries and established his unique style – a style that was to inspire both the forerunners of Art Deco and the Modernist Movement.

In the kubus couch a great importance has also the functionality (the functionality of the object is one of the pivot for the Modernism): following this theory the most important function for a couch is the offering a comfortable seat. And this is the most important characteristic of the kubus couch, thanks to the solid wooden framework and the soft cushion.

You can find the kubus couch in two different version, with 2 or 3 seater: so you can find the kubus couch right for your living room or office. You will find not only a solid, luxury and comfortable couch, but also a piece of history design, with a geometrical  and unique line, thanks to the framework (in solid wood) and the soft cushion in fine leather.
