Eileen Gray Bed: a New Style

The eileen gray bed represents one of the most important work in the furniture design by the Irish designer. The work as a designer is only one of the multiple aspects of the Eileen Gray activity: the Irish artist during her career gave space to garnishment, internal and external architecture.
For the experts of history design the Eileen gray bed represents the turning point in the Irish designer activity, the passage from the activities bounder to internal decorations (like the work and decorations made using the lacquers, an art that Eileen gray learned from an expert in this filed) to the activities bounder proper to the design, with the planning and the realizing of complete furniture.

The Irish designer and architect Eileen Gray  attended the Slade School of Fine Art in London from 1898 to 1902. At the same time she also worked at a furniture-making workshop, where she became acquainted with Asian lacquers, which would start her on her life's work. Between 1902 and 1905 Eileen Gray attended courses at the École Colarossi and the Académie Julian in Paris. From the Japanese artisan Sougawara, Eileen Gray learned Japanese lacquer techniques.

In 1913 she first showed her work at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, where she attracted the notice of the couturier and art collector Jacques Doucet, who became Eileen Gray's first major client. In 1922 Eileen Gray opened the gallery "Jean Désert", where she sold her lacquer tables and screens.

The Eileen gray bed was planned and developed within the first important project of furniture followed totally by the Irish designer: the furniture of the house in Paris (in rue Lota) for the famous stylist Suzane Tabolt. The stylist assigned to Eileen Gray the task to take care of all the furniture and the decoration of the house: in this work the Irish designer realized the most famous objects of furniture among her works. That was a hard task, but has permitted to Eileen Grey to show her creativity and ability.

Eileen Gray was one of the pioneers who created what we now call modern design during the 1920s and 1930s. Her name is pronounced in the same breath as Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer. Her tubular steel furniture was revolutionary at that time, and is now accepted as classic.

And the project of the Eileen gray bed was really modern, both for the concept and for the realized solutions. This bed is really a day bed, a couch that could be transformed in a comfortable and soft bed: in a single object were reunited two souls, one social and the other private.

The particular shape of the Eileen gray bed make it accessible form every side. And thanks to its shape you can put this day bed in every room, without limitations for the position or the available place.
The Eileen gray bed had a great success: if you choose this day bed for your living room, you will find not only a versatile couch, but also a comfortable and elegant bed.
