Egg Chair Jacobsen: A Shell Of Style

There are pieces of furniture that became classic in the modern design during the years and never lost its charm and originality, in every place you will put it: the egg chair Jacobsen is rightly part of these objects. The Egg chair was created exclusively for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, which he also designed. The commission to design every element of the hotel building as well as the furniture was Jacobsen’s grand opportunity to put his theories of integrated design and architecture into practice. The Egg is one of the triumphs of Jacobsen’s total design.

The significance was in the contrast of the architecture with its interior design: he deliberately created furniture like The Egg in organic, sculptural shapes to offset the hard, vertical lines of the hotel’s lobby, where the chairs resided. Its wings give the sitter a sense of comfort and privacy—perhaps the inspiration behind its name.

Arne Jacobsen is one of the grandfathers of modern Danish furniture and the minimalist Danish style. While Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) was also a successful architect, he is best remembered for his simple, yet elegant and functional chair designs.

Indeed is impossible not recognize immediately  the unique and original shape of the egg chair Jacobsen (the shape is inspired to an egg, with its rounding and wraparound form): the idea to realize a chair with an egg shape, made this chair an unique object in the history of design furniture. The egg chair Jacobsen can also provide privacy for the user, even in crowded places with a lot of persons around.

Farther this characteristics the egg chair Jacobsen shows some incredible comfort qualities: the backrest of the egg chair perfectly wraps the human body, and its tilting movement (made possible thanks to a mechanism that can be regulated on the weight of every single user) make the egg chair a perfect armrest for relax.

Arne Jacobsen is said to have drawn inspiration for the Egg Chair from Eero Saarinen’s ‘Womb Chair’. The theory that the style for the chair was inspired is debatable, as the chairs had their own identity and had been complete by themselves. The chairs were much appreciated and in demand for their unusual aesthetic appeal and comfort that they provided the user. In spite of this only a little number of these original chairs had been ever made.

You should also remember that the egg chair Jacobsen can rotate with a 360° angle: this characteristic increases the ease of use of this chair. The summation of comfort and usability characteristics makes  the egg chair an evergreen in the design furniture and an object you can combine with every kind of furniture and style.

If you choose the egg chair Jacobsen for your home or office, you can find this unique piece of design in various colors and in a wide range of fabric and leather upholstery. The star base is made of aluminum mounted on a satin polished steel pedestal. The shells are made of a synthetic material, padded with cold-cured foam. An upholstered foot stool with aluminum base is available for the Egg.

Chose the egg chair Jacobsen and you will find a comfortable and elegant chair, suitable for all furniture style.
