Barcelona Sofa by Mies Van Der Rohe: a Chair for a King

With the barcelona sofa mies van der rohe united in a single object the various incentives that underlined in his creations and work: the works in the design field but also the work in architectonic field, with an high level elegance. The Barcelona sofa by mies van der rohe was designed as a royal couch and we will see why.

With the unique characteristics of the Barcelona sofa mies van der rohe created an unique and unrepeatable object, with a style that could be considered modern at present time, after almost a century from its project and develop: indeed the Barcelona sofa was presented to the Universal Expo in Barcelona in 1929 and maintains unchanged its charm and its modern and elegant shape.

Mies van der Rohe began his career in architecture in Berlin, working as an architect first in the studio of Bruno Paul and then, like Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, for Peter Behrens. In 1927, a housing project called Weissenhof Siedlung in Stuttgart, Germany, would bring these names together again. Widely believed to be one of the most notable projects in the history of modern architecture, it includes buildings by Gropius, Corbu, Behrens, Mies and others.

As a rising figure of the modernist movement, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was selected to design the Weimar Republic’s Pavilion for the Barcelona Industrial Exposition of 1929. Through masterful proportioning and planning, Mies created a rhythmic and entirely unprecedented space, which elevated industrial-age materials to a level of grace never before achieved

Inside, Mies included chairs and stools conceived as a resting place for the King and Queen of Spain. Determined to create a chair worthy of royalty, Mies is thought to have based the designs, with their signature criss-cross frames, on the campaign chairs of Ancient Rome.

In 1930, Mies succeeded Walter Gropius as the director of the Bauhaus, where he stayed until the school closed in 1933. In 1937, Mies emigrated from Europe to the United States, and a year later became the director of architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

With the Barcelona sofa mies van der rohe created a seat that reflects perfectly the canons of Modernis: the German designer was inspired and influenced by the Modernism. Indeed this sofa is inspired to canon of functionality: this couch is first of all a very comfortable seat, that gives a big and relaxing space to the user, and doesn’t sacrifice any comfort to the style or to useless decorations, that are not helpful in the field of comfort.

And with the Barcelona sofa mies van der rohe objectified another canon of his work: the greater attentions for details. The realization of the Barcelona sofa melts together solidity (thanks to the steel framework), style and comfort: a couch adapted to a king.

If you choose the Barcelona sofa by mier van der rohe for your home or office, you will buy not only a comfortable sofa, thanks to the leather coating, but also an object with an unique and modern style: a piece of history furniture that will give a touch of elegance to every room.
